Underworld: Evolution (2006) Review

Writer: kayleigh lewiskayleigh lewis

After the success of the first ‘Underworld’ it was inevitable that there was a sequel. Most of the cast from the original return to reprise their roles including Kate Beckinsale as vampire Selene.

The story starts off with Selene narrating the events of the first film; including the part in which lycan Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman) is turned into a lycan and vampire hybrid. Something that is much stronger than both creatures…and something that the Elder vampire Viktor (Bill Nighy) feared.

After Viktor’s death at the end of the first film Selene is looking for a third Elder, Marcus (Tony Curran) who is still in hibernation. She has to get to him before Kraven (Shane Brolly) does. After hiding Michael in a safe house, Selene hurries to the mansion to plead her case.

Unfortunately for her, Marcus has already been awoken by Kraven and is- understandably- furious with Kraven for doing so. During Marcus’ slumber he has turned into a bat-like creature. After biting Kraven, Marcus learns all that has happened…including turning Michael into a hybrid. He then proceeds to kill all the vampires in the mansion including Kraven before going to Selene’s safe house where Michael is hiding.

Much like the first film, ‘Evolution’ relies very heavily on the gothic-horror element as well as excellent action scenes. Much like the first one I still had problems with the werewolf designs but maybe I’m being quite biased as I want my wolves to look a bit more furrier, regardless if they’re a monster or not!
