Tarzan (1999)

Writer: kayleigh lewiskayleigh lewis

As with a lot of classic books, ‘Tarzan’ has been remade numerous times. The most well known recent version being a animated version by Disney way back in 1999.

I wasn’t interested in the film for many years but only very recently have been able to watch it due to the fact that Phil Collins does the soundtrack to it. This was done because apparently Disney was getting a bit tired of their Broadway style musical numbers during filming.

Everyone should know the story by now about a man being brought up by a family of gorillas in a African jungle until he comes across a beautiful young girl called Jane who teaches Tarzan how to be a human.

As someone who likes Phil Collins, he was the only reason why I got interested in wanting to watch this because of the soundtrack. This wasn’t the first Disney soundtrack Phil would do; a few years later he’d do the songs to ‘Brother Bear’. ‘Tarzan’ is moved by Phil’s iconic Disney songs such as ‘Son of Man’ and of course ‘You’ll Be In My Heart’.

Whilst the film is quite dark (although not as dark as ‘Hunchback of Notre-Dame’ a few years earlier), it does have its lighthearted moments when it comes to the talking animals that you typically see in Disney animated films.

Over all, an excellent end to the animated films from the ‘90’s era of Disney. Come on Disney; I dare you to do a live action remake of this classic!
