Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) Review

Writer: kayleigh lewiskayleigh lewis

Considering how most of Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was going up until ‘No Way Home’s’ release, many people had little to no hope for this film. With Disney forcing woke identity politics into all of their phase 4 films and TV shows- no matter how big or small- many like myself were willing to pass on ‘No Way Home’ when they’d announced it.

That was until Sony had released the first trailer for it. Everyone- particularly people over a certain age- got really excited. I however was hesitant. It hadn’t been the first time that Disney had used nostalgia bait and they did it to the point where they had basically abused it and it left many people with sour tastes in their mouths as a result (looking at you ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’). As ‘No Way Home’ was in collaboration with Sony more than Disney people still had some hope.

Up until the film’s release, Sony hadn’t had any success with Spider-Man since Spider-Man 2 in 2004 nearly twenty years ago. The recent MCU Spider-Man films had mostly mixed to negative reactions from fans, particularly people who were old enough to remember Toby Maguire’s Spider-Man from the early 2000’s.

When ‘No-Way Home’ was released people were able to relax; the film ended up being one of the most highest grossing films of all time and had overtook 2018’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’, almost reaching $2billion at the box office (much to Disney’s anger).

The story starts off after the events from ‘Far From Home’ in which Mysterio has revealed Spider-Man’s (Tom Holland) identity to the world. Understandably terrified for them, Spider-Man’s first thought is to protect MJ (Zendaya) and Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) from the inevitable mob that will go after them because they know Peter Parker is Spider-Man.

Seeing MJ trapped already by a crowd of people that are mobbing her, Spidy immediately swoops down and swings her away from the crowd. Spidy doesn’t stop until he reaches his and Aunt May’s apartment and then explains as quickly as he can- whilst closing various curtains around them for privacy because of the already swarming media- what has happened.

It isn’t before long that Spidy and his friends as well as Aunt May are being interrogated by the Department of Damage Control but are released with no charges…all thanks to lawyer Matt Murdock (Charley Cox from the Netflix version of Daredevil).

However, Spidy’s trouble’s don’t stop there; everywhere he and his friends go he’s constantly getting mobbed by people. It isn’t before long before he thinks that enough is enough; he has to see Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) in order to see if he can cast a spell to make everyone forget that Peter Parker is Spider-Man.

Whilst I’m no Spider-Man fan (I only saw it because I liked Doctor Strange) I really enjoyed this film. I had no issues with this film at all and I’m pleased to see that my earlier fears were calmed with everyone’s performance in the film.

Andrew Garfield gets some much needed- and deserved- redemption as well as Jamie Foxx as Electro. Again, not a Spidy fan so I can’t comment on the previous films properly. It was also great seeing Willem Dafoe back as the Green Goblin from the original Spider-Man film back in 2002. Of course, it was also great to see Toby Maguire back as well.

All in all, ‘No Way Home’ fixes some of the mistakes from ‘Spider-Man 3’ and the ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ films and is a well deserved celebration of all the Spider-Man films that have been released over the past 20 years. Take notes Disney; this is how you do fan service and cameo appearances properly!
