It was inevitable after the success of the success of the first 'Sonic the Hedgehog' film that Paramount would do a sequel. In fact, they didn't just announce a sequel; they announced a trilogy. Fans- myself included- were overjoyed.
Returning were the original cast as well as some new faces. Or rather, new voices. Colleen O'Shaughnessey joins the cast voicing Sonic's new partner Tails the fox. Another addition is a actor that many fans have been wanting for the role; Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna. Once again, the fans were delighted.
Upon its release it was once again no surprise to anyone that 'Sonic 2' was a major success. When I finally sat down to watch it I too was delighted with what I saw.
The story starts off with Dr Robotnik (excellently played by Jim Carry) still stuck on the mushroom planet (a clear nod to the Mushroom Hill Zone from the 'Sonic and Knuckles' MegaDrive game) from the previous film. As he tries to figure out a way to get back to Earth he suddenly runs into Knuckles the Echidna (voiced by Idris Elba).
In a sneaky way, Robotnik manages to persuade Knuckles to join him in helping him get back to Earth and to destroy Sonic.
Meanwhile back on Earth, Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter) are going on vacation to Maddie's sister's wedding. Sonic insists that he'll be fine as he tries to persuade them to leave him behind so that he can look after their dog. Tom and Maddie eventually agree to leave Sonic behind with the dog. Sonic is delighted and sends the couple on their way through one of his ring portals.
The moment they're gone, Sonic is immediately making a mess everywhere.
A few days later Sonic gets a video call from Tom asking if everything is alright back at home. Mere seconds earlier saw Sonic speedily cleaning up everything before taking the video call and he reassures Tom that everything is fine and that he wasn't going around trying to save people like he had been doing earlier in the film.
After Tom's call ends, Sonic breaths a sigh of relief...and gets back to what he was doing before; having fun. That is until Tails shows up to warn Sonic about a potential danger.
One of my favourite Sonic games was always 'Sonic 2' so when I heard that they were basically trying to interpret that (also with a little bit of 'Sonic 3') I was overjoyed. Tails was always one of my favourite Sonic sidekicks (sorry Amy and Blaze!) so I was even more delighted to see the two-tailed fox in the film and I also really liked Colleen's performance of him on here.
Knuckles I was never a fan of in the games but I really liked Idris as Knuckles on here. I admit that he was very much a badass in his performance. Of course, Jim Carry steals the show once again as Robotnik.
There's a lot of nods to the games during the film (I won't say much due to there being spoilers associated with the references) which will make any Sonic fan very happy.
All in all a very enjoyable film for gamers and Sonic fans alike although I do think some kids might find the nearly two hour mark a bit tedious.
