So…we’ve now come full circle with Peter Jackson’s excellent ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy review-wise and film-wise.
After three years the trilogy finally came to a close with ‘Return of the King’ with more impressive battle scenes and visual and special effects. Also, ‘Return of the King’ was one of the very few films that have been nominated for almost every single Oscar category (except the Acting categories) and won them all. It was as if the Academy (before they went woke) were waiting for the series to end before giving it all the awards that ‘Lord of the Rings’ deserved.
The story starts of with a flash-back to Gollum (Andy Serkis) as a Hobbit-like creature before he had even became Gollum as he and a friend are fishing in a river. During the trip they find something; The Ring. Immediately there is a fight between them and Gollum chokes his friend to death, leaving him the victor and owner of The Ring.
Throughout the centuries, The Ring continues to poison Gollum’s mind and eventually he has to hide in the Misty Mountains because he no longer likes the sun.
Back in the present day, Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) are in Mordor country and have nearly finished their steps into Sauron’s domain; they just need to get past the Black Gates. It is also sometime later that Sam realizes that Frodo hasn’t slept and tries to persuade him to but Gollum is insistent; they need to keep moving in case they get caught.
Meanwhile, Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), Gimli (John Rhys-Davies), Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Théoden (Bernard Hill), and Éomer (Karl Urban) ride through the forest of Fangorn to Isengard, where they meet Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin (Billy Boyd) feasting among the wreckage from the battle from towards the end of the previous film.
When it came out, like the previous ‘Lord of the Rings’ films, ‘Return of the King’ was praised for its stunning visual and special effects as well as battle scenes and performances from everyone. I also really enjoyed it despite a few changes that they made to the film that weren’t in the books but said changes were very minor and understandable as to why they made them.
Over all, ‘Return of the King’ is a worthy final to the great ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy by Peter Jackson. Amazon, you should be ashamed of yourselves for doing what you’ve done to ‘Lord of the Rings’. Good luck with your series; you’re going to need it!
