Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) Review

Writer: kayleigh lewiskayleigh lewis

If I were to say which of the Harry Potter films (and books) is my favourite, it would have to be ‘Goblet of Fire’. I swear that it has nothing to do with the dragon. Honest! Ok, I might be lying a bit there; it might have something to do with the dragon!

Unlike the other Harry Potter films and books, this one happens to be the most action-packed of them all.

The story starts off with a shot of what’s clearly an old and abandoned house on top of a hill. Or, at least, we assume that it’s abandoned. A light comes on in one of the windows. The old caretaker of the house, who happens to glance out the window, sees the light. He’s clearly not happy and thinks that the local kids have gotten in again.

As he moves up the stairs he suddenly hears voices coming from one of the rooms. That is until a blinding green light lights up the area; the old caretaker has immediately been killed by said light.

Harry (Daniel Radcliff) is immediately woken up by the brief nightmare. He tries to shrug it off as a bad dream but he can’t shake the feeling that it was real.

Just then, his friend Hermione (Emma Watson) comes barging into the room trying to wake him and Ron (Rupert Grint) up. They are supposed to be going to the Quidditch World Cup and are meeting up with Mr Diggory near the top of a hill. His son Cedric (a pre-‘Twilight’ Robert Pattinson) also joins Mr Diggory.

Upon touching the Portkey that is waiting for them at the top of the hill, the group immediately lands just outside the Quidditch stadium. After they make their way through the field of tents the group finds their own tent.

Harry is amazed at how large the tent looks on the inside compared to the outside; it looks like a normal tent on the outside but on the inside it’s clearly the size of a small kitchen.

It’s soon time for the Quidditch World Cup. As Harry and his friends make their way to the top of the stands they come across their old foe Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) who boasts that the Malfoys have a seat next to the Minister of Magic himself. Ignoring Draco, the group carries on to the top of the stands and the game soon begins.

After the game sees Harry and his friends back inside the tent celebrating the end of the cup…when suddenly Mr Weasley hears something that doesn’t sound like singing.

People are running around screaming as men in masks and cloaks are causing havoc and destroying tents everywhere. Harry and his friends immediately become separated when they’re overwhelmed by the fleeing crowds and Harry is knocked unconscious.

It isn’t before long before Harry is woken up by a man’s voice (a pre-‘Doctor Who’ David Tennent) shouting something in the background before something lights up the sky.

Once again like its predecessors ‘Goblet of Fire’ was met with praise from fans, critics and audiences alike. This was also the first time that Patrick Doyle took over the score of the films from John Williams and was also met with praise.

Personally I really enjoyed ‘Goblet of Fire’. The only issue I had with it was that we didn’t get to see the Quidditch World Cup being played! It would’ve been nice to have seen proper Quidditch on the big screen. A thing that still annoys me to this day.

‘Goblet of Fire’ also happened to be the first Harry Potter film to have gotten the 12 rating from the BBFC in the UK. Most likely because it was a lot darker and more mature than the first three films.

Over all, yet another worthy sequel to the Harry Potter franchise.
