Batman Vs Superman (2016) Review

Writer: kayleigh lewiskayleigh lewis

Despite divisive opinions of the ‘Man of Steel’ in 2013 Warner Bros still went on ahead to do a “sequel”; ‘Batman Vs Superman’. I say “sequel” because it was supposed to be called ‘Man of Steel 2’ but they had wanted to include Batman in it too.

There were also many debates as to how this film came around; Marvel had announced ‘Captain America: Civil War’ round about the same time as ‘Batman Vs Superman’. The only difference being is that ‘Civil War’ was announced sometime later than ‘Batman Vs Superman’ and that Marvel clearly got the idea from comic book rival DC.

The only difference between those two films is that- in my opinion- ‘Batman Vs Superman’ was the better of the two of them (I will explain later). Especially if you watch the director’s cut.

The story starts off with a flashback to a young Bruce Wayne when his parents got murdered one night.

It then skips ahead to a few decades later during the final battle towards the end of ‘Man of Steel’ between Superman (Henry Cavill) and General Zod (Michael Shannon). During the battle and on the ground, we see Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) trying desperately to drive around Metropolis to a branch of the Wayne Foundation building.

Bruce is trying to reach a friend through the phone who is in the building at the time but he gets little to no response. Sadly Superman and General Zod’s fight ends up going through the building, knocking it down in the progress. Bruce’s friend never makes it out alive.

It then skips ahead to 18 months later…when a rock of Kryptonite is found in the Indian Ocean.

Like its predecessor ‘Batman Vs Superman’ was met with mixed to negative responses although the director’s cut made it more watchable to some people.

As I said earlier, I much preferred this over ‘Civil War’. At least in the case of ‘Batman Vs Superman’ it didn’t try to make a joke out of the serious matter of whether or not superheroes should or shouldn’t be registered. Something that annoyed me a lot with ‘Captain America: Civil War’ even though I liked that film too.

There are many things to enjoy about this film such as the opening with Bruce driving around Metropolis during General Zod’s attack…and the appearance of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman towards the end of the film. Both scenes are accompanied by Hans Zimmer’s excellent score.

The three-hour running time might put off some people though.

Over all, if you are planning on watching the Zack Snyder version of ‘Justice League’, my advice would be to watch the director’s cut first.
